Uploading Gedcom files to Ancestry etc

Post by Richchad » 27 May 2009 17:21

I want to upload Gedcom files from FH V4, however when I select export then Gedcom and tick all the boxes to exclude notes records etc, it still shows some fields such as cause of death, occupation etc, which I don't want to upload, is there an easy way to exclude all of these without going into each individual persons details and deleting from the saved copy?

Have a look at Split Tree Helper on the file menu. There are lots of options for what you include or exclude.

I hadn't noticed before, but in V3 Export to Gedcom just told you to use split tree helper instead, now they seem to have implemented a variation of it. Not sure why they're different.

Thanks for that Chris, I should have looked a bit harder at the various options, looks like it will do the job for me..
Thanks again.

Well I was one who called for the Export functionality to be properly implemented rather than be a long complicated list of instructions which disappear the moment you acknowledge the dialog and therefore you have to write down the instruction if you aren't that familiar with the software. Classic GUI Blooper. However I did ask that the export functionality to be pretty much like the split tree function but without the requirement to create a copy of the file and then run the STHF on that copy. In other words exporting would automatically create a copy after the STHF has done it's stuff leaving you still in your untouched main Gedcom file. Exporting should at least allow a level of privacy hiding equivalent to the website generation function, at least to be consistent in how data is output from the program.
