V4 multiple diagram orientation - adopted family

Post by ejp » 24 May 2009 06:37

I am really pleased that I can now achieve this chart in V4. V4 allows multiple diagrams within a chart to each have their own orientation, particularly useful in cases such as adoption.

V4 multiple diagram orientation - adopted family

Start with a name only text scheme & a very small adopted & birth family to practice. If you are
not experienced with diagrams & charts firstly work through “Getting the Most from Family
Historian 4” chapters 3,9 & 10.  Too many different techniques are utilised to be described in detail
here. Take your time, & save your efforts as an FH chart each time you tackle it so that you can
return where you left off. This is a chart you will only construct once in a while because of it’s
complexity but it is worth it!! If you get stuck on something in particular please get back to FHUG.
I hope there is no errors in these instructions!

Step 1
Start with an Anc & Desc tree for individual George.
Top-down orientation
Step 2
By right clicking on the background, insert into diagram an Anc & Desc tree selecting individual Jane Smith
– birth parents Harry & Joanne
R-L orientation
Step 3
By right clicking on the background insert into diagram an Anc & Desc tree selecting individual Jane Smith
– adoptive parents Jacob & Freda
L-R orientation
Step 4
By right clicking on the background insert into diagram another Anc & Desc tree selecting individual Jane Smith
– any parents
Top-down orientation
Now hide everyone shown in deep purple colour
Step 5
Using box & bar movement, move Erica & Robin further from Jane Smith in lowest tree
Step 6
Move trees until there is only one Jane Smith box showing aligned under George
Step 7
Turn off diagram ‘check for duplicates’ option to remove connecting ribbons
Step 8
By right clicking on the background, insert into diagram a rectangle to connect Jane & George
Step 9
Insert any explanatory information using text boxes.

V4 multiple diagram orientation - adopted family

Post by AnneEast » 03 Dec 2009 09:14

Brilliant!!!

I don't have adoptions but looking at this work through has opened all sorts of other possibilities to me. I know all the details are in the help files but, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
