Hi,
I have over 5000 entries plus hundereds of photo's. recently I have noticed that the cursor 'sticks' when moving around my diagrams. Is this a Vista problem or Family Historian? Any tips on a cure?

What version of FH are you using?
I have not seen problems with this, even on large diagrams.
When it sticks is the processor busy, are the hard drives working hard?
How large is your diagram?
How much memory do you have on Vista?

Sounds like memory to me, when you says sticks do you mean lags behind when you move the mouse? Is your anti-virus scanning or anything similar?

My HP Pavilion laptop is 18 months old and has Vista Home Premium as its operating system. It has 2GB of ram, so plenty of memory.
I have just over 5000 entries in my GEDCOM file and something in the region of about 500 pictures, which are not embeded in the GEDCOM file but linked to the software.
When I tried to move the cursor it would not move initially but eventually after several seconds delay. This made it impossible to track over my diagrams.
I am most grateful for your replies and because you haven't heard of this problem before I realised something with my system was the most probable cause of the problem. As a consequence I descided to remove Family Historian from my laptop and reload it. I have both my original disc for windows 2.1 and my update disc to Family Historian 3. I note that neither of these state that they are Vista compatible.
I am delighted to report that this appears to have resolved the problem as the cursor now moves freely over my diagrams. I do however have one other question. Vista contains a facility to run programms not specifically designed for it (like Family Historian 3). I have not used this facility before. Would you recommend that I do.
One final question if I may. Is the latest version of FH, specifically Vista compatible?
My sincere thanks for your kindness in responding to my problem.[smile]

I too have recently had problems with the cursor moving slowly when viewing diagrams. However, I discovered that (in my case) it was not due to FH but rather, the recent upgrades with MS Windows. Personally, I suspect that some of Microsoft's changes have been the cause of problems that they deliberately initiated as they had to close loopholes in their code from Hackers etc. These loopholes are numerous and Microsoft cannot attempt to publicise what, how and the affect of the 'updates' is - why tell hackers how they are being blocked.
However - I have found that Microsoft are guilty of immense stupidity at times. The latest example is the facility to delete a recent address from the recently visited bar at the top of Internet Explorer. They inserted the delete point right next to the drop-down arrow so that the unsuspecting user who uses the drop-down arrow, moves their cursor to their chosen web-address, brings the cursor just inside the list to highlight the web-address and click - - - NO the website does not appear - the link has been deleted ! Oh well I'll learn . . . Moaning over !
I have noticed, however, that after a couple of days of use, my PCs have returned to their normal pace of operation. I presume, therefore, that there has been some global changes to Windows which has required considerable processing power to implement with, of course, the additional load of running Virus checks on all the changes. It may not, therefore, be your computer or data that is the cause of your problems.
