Family Tree CD

Post by Marilyn » 18 May 2009 19:11

The ability to create a Family Tree CD is a brilliant idea, but is there any way to put a diagram on the disk as well as reports.

The only way I can see is to copy the PDF file over, is this the way to go, it is just that it would be nice to have it in the programme.

Otherwise, as I say a brilliant idea to send to other members of the family.

Thanks Marilyn[smile]

The problem with putting the read only version on the disk is that your family would need to install the program to use it. There is nothing to stop you copying your gedcom file on if you want to.

Family Tree CD

Hello Marilyn

I have used the Create CD function in V3. It creates, effectively, a website that you can copy to CD. Have created all the files, you can edit them if you have an HTML editor - I'm sure Jane can recommend some. I use Microsoft Expression Web 2, but I got this from work ...

In this way you can add extra pages and include diagrams and photos or other multimedia. I add in all sorts of social history and other background material, and I'm currently sorting out a huge number of references from Papers Past in New Zealand that I'll sort into various categories such as Bankruptcies, Divorces, Farming, Industry, Legal, etc. I also add a copy of the output from GedView as this gives a mini-tree at the top of each page which some people like to use to navigate around the family.

I keep 'my' pages in  a separate set of folders to the FH output and merge them all together when I'm happy with what I've created. Trouble now is that it needs a DVD [rolleyes] since I've just added rather a large video clip.

Hope that helps.

David

I have standardised on the 'Create website/CD' after playing with all the bells and whistles of phpGEDview etc., since it is straightforward, and gives a simply-presented yet comprehensive set of information.
Although the v4.01 patch 'got it working properly' in version 4, I notice it appears to have a problem with URL links that contain ampersands (&), adding a semi-colon (;) after them. This breaks the links!

I don't know whether this has already been reported, but please could someone look into this for the next patch?!

Thanks

Has anyone experienced this ?

Using either the Make a Family Tree CD or Create a Website menu items everything seems to process smoothly until the finished product is viewed.

All the JPG multimedia files display just fine but none of the PDF are shown.

Is there a setting that I am overlooking ?

The PDF files are showing okay in the Multimedia Records and in the individuals Properties Dialog.

I have started using the V 4.0 upgrade to V 3.0.
In V 3 the HTML was ok now doing one in V4 I am getting this on the Family Group

Husband: John Anderson

It appears in the code as
Husband: <a href='fam116.html' class='bodylink'>John Anderson</a>

I would like an easy way of changing it or it not happening as I have a lot of pages to change.
Is this a problem that needs to be sent to Calico
Thanks for any help on this

Regards Ann

Hi Ann,

I'm pretty sure this issue was sorted in a recent 'fix' (V 4.0.1) issued by Calico Pie. It's available here: http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downloads/latest.htm. As it says this will only work if you already have version 4 up and running. However assuming that to be the case then I found it very easy to download and install this small fix.
Good Luck
Cheers Chris
