V4 Upgrade now Flags missing

I know that someone else referred to missing flags but it did not help me.

On upgrading to v4 from 3.1 I find that I have no census flags on my charts, which I did have under 3.1. As I have spent a considerable amount of time inserting them, I am anxious to know what has happened. I had assumed that everything in 3.1 would be transferred to a project file in 4, but flags not showing. Please tell me that there is an easy remedy to recover these.

Bill, did you add them to standard charts or make custom charts. Standard items are normally replaced on upgrades.

Which is one of the reasons for making custom saved versions of text schemes and diagram box settings etc.

I suspect it's only the diagram flag settings which are missing the flags on the individuals should be fine.

Thanks for the reply. All my charts were standard. So on that basis should they not be there?

I am not sure what you mean by 'I suspect it's only the diagram flag settings which are missing the flags on the individuals should be fine.'How do I find the flags and how do I get them back on the diagram, which is what I use for establishing, who I have census information for?

If you watch the Using Flags and Icons tutorial again

http://www.fhug.org.uk/flash/fhflags.html

You can skip through the first section as you have flags on your people, and just follow from about 2/3's of the way through.

Alternately see page 105 (PDF) of the Getting the Most Book for a details of adding icons to V4 (which is mostly the same as it was for V3)

I have just noticed that there are some flags when I click on the 'Media' button, but still do not know why they are not on my charts?

I know that it is early morning and I am not at my sharpest, but this suggests that I have got to put the flags back again, myself. This is something that I have spent a lot of time doing using v3.1 and now I have spent money to buy an upgrade, which asks me to do it again. Please tell me that I have misunderstood. Why can't the project file for v4 simply copy what I had before? Why would someone go out of the way, not to do this?

Hello Bill,

I'm a little confused when you say -
'but this suggests that I have got to put the flags back again, myself.'

I have transferred from V3.1.2 to V4 without a problem and have been very impressed so far. I have noticed that V4 has a lot more facilities and, therefore, I have begun to enhance my Diagrams using ICONS.

If you use a GEDCOM file that worked under V3 then the Flags could be SET or UNSET (by various methods). For some users, the Flags would be used in Diagrams to enable ICONS to be inserted showing (for example) those who have been found on the Census.

My confusion is -
a. is it the FLAGS that have been lost ? or
b. is it the ICONS that no longer appear ?

To fix a. could be done using Queries and b. by resetting the Icons (as Jane suggested earlier).

Hope this helps

What I believe Jane is saying is that you should have created a custom chart originally with your flag/icon settings in it and this would still have been there following the upgrade. However, the standard charts are replaced during an upgrade: presumably necessary as the standard charts need to take into account the new features of v4. So if you accidentally originally added the flag/icon settings to the standard chart instead then you will have lost your settings.

I think you're getting a bit confused about the difference between a flag (which is basically a line of text that says something like 'UK Census 1861') and icon which is the little picture displayed on the diagram.

The flags will almost certainly still be attached to your individuals, the problem is that the settings on the diagram that link icons to those flags have gone. So create a custom chart and add these icons again. Its a pain but won't take too long.

Thanks for your help. It is as I thought another job to to do, which was already done under 3.1. It is the 'Icons' that are missing and I was not aware that I would have to re-do actions post v4. The experts seem to be aware of this but not, unfortunately, the laymen.
