Editing of Named Lists

Post by goodwin2 » 09 May 2009 05:52

Unfortunately, SOURCE TYPE, does not come over from Family Treemaker's gedcom format to FH.  Nor do AKA's but they show up in the exception files and thankfully, there is not a ton of them.

I have a large database with the following TYPES:

Census 3945
Obituaries 77
Wills - 16
Other types - LOTS - books, websites, cards, newspapers, cemetery records, certificates, gravestones, etc., etc.

I have been able to put the first three into NAMED LISTS.  My question: is there a way to 'mass edit' from the named lists so that I can get the proper type into my sources?

Have been able to do some VERY simple queries but 'mass edit' - if even possible - is way beyond my capabilties.

Any help here would be MOST appreciated.

Not sure if this covers it, but wish list item 37 might help.

Otherwise (or even so if you like), vote for item 324.

(And sorry again but... Can anyone tell me how to insert a link to those from here?)

Have you removed the type fields which FTM put in or are they still there as UDF?

If they are still there it might be possible to do a search and replace to fix them.

If you can send me a file or sample file with the old fields in I can work out what you need to replace with what.

Hi Jane,

Sorry about the length of what follows.
JUST finished reviewing the Exception file and have come up with this. Not sure what you were refering to by 'type fields' so here is what I have - may be more info than you need, or wrong info.

I believe all my sources have transferred correctly however none have 'type'.

The lead in to my LONG exception file [1626 pages] says:

Indented lines marked 'EXCLUDED BRANCH LINE:' indicate
data lines which are not necessarily invalid in
themselves but which have had to be excluded as a
 consequence of excluding other lines.

So here is the overall outline of FTM's handling of Sources.

FTM has 23 source types available, including 'Other' which does not allow a further definition.

FTM has the following in the screen for source input:

Title of Source:
Author/Originator:
Publication Fact:
Source location:
Source medium: which equals 'type'
Call Number:
Source Quality:
Comment:
Number of Images:

Below is just one of the many exceptions - relating to Census - that were generated when FH opened my gedcom from FTM.

Record Type=Source Id=S338340
l.580983 - EXCLUDED: invalid line           : '1  REPO '
   l.580984 - EXCLUDED BRANCH LINE:        : '2  CALN '
   l.580985 - EXCLUDED BRANCH LINE:        : '3  MEDI Census'

FTM's source page has the following [fields]?

1. Citations for this fact:
2. Master Source:
3, Citation Page
4. Citation Text:
5. Footnote: (Printed Format)

There is a tick box 'Include citation text in footnote' which I have checked.

I researched the above ID=S338340

It  leads to 1910 Census for Guymon, Texas County, Oklahoma.  There are two individuals linked to that source. I had used #1, 2, and 4 for input.  #5 is automatically added when that screen closes.  In this insance there is text in citation text - just says 'age 25'

Some other exception listings are:

Record Type=Source Id=S010850
l.581099 - EXCLUDED: invalid line           : '1  REPO '
   l.581100 - EXCLUDED BRANCH LINE:        : '2  CALN '
   l.581101 - EXCLUDED BRANCH LINE:        : '3  MEDI Interview'

Record Type=Source Id=S010859
l.581130 - EXCLUDED: invalid line           : '1  REPO '
   l.581131 - EXCLUDED BRANCH LINE:        : '2  CALN '
   l.581132 - EXCLUDED BRANCH LINE:        : '3  MEDI Book'

Record Type=Source Id=S327811
l.581150 - EXCLUDED: invalid line           : '1  REPO '
   l.581151 - EXCLUDED BRANCH LINE:        : '2  CALN '
   l.581152 - EXCLUDED BRANCH LINE:        : '3  MEDI Other'

And MANY more.  Not sure they cover all the types that I have used but many are.

In checking through all my exception files, I find some that have been loaded - perhaps in a slightly different place.

Not at all sure what these mean:

Record Type=Individual Id=I22342
l.461145 - INFO ONLY: Loaded uncategorised data (non-GEDCOM): '3  CONC I ' - they have different letters after the CONC.  There are a number of them.

I have 86 pages of:

Record Type=Source Id=S010859
l.581130 - EXCLUDED: invalid line           : '1  REPO '
etc.  - all related to Census TYPE.

I'm hoping there is an easy way at least to get TYPE added to the several thousand census listings. Don't even want to estimate how many books and other categories there are - also with no TYPE.

Auto fill is some help but having an EDIT/REPEAT button would be even better.

The REPO lines should have been level 0 repositories with links, I think.

I was hoping it might have been a simple task of renaming one item for another but it may not be.

What might work would be to search and replace

1 REPO
2 CALN
3 MEDI

with
1 _TYPE

You would need an advanced text editor search replace tool though (Textpad or a search and replace tool) and see if that sorts it.

The big problem would mean going back to the original file though, but you should be able to then merge in the sources from the old file to the new one.

If you want me to try for you if you send me a file I will see if I can do the replace for you.

Jane,
I think it is possible that goodwin2's 'EXCLUDED: invalid line's and consequent 'EXCLUDED BRANCH LINES' could have been intended as Source Repository Citations in the Source Records. See the GEDCOM 5.5 definitions: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ... RCE_RECORD
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ... Y_CITATION
The Source Media Type definition at http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ... MEDIA_TYPE has a fixed list of allowed values:
SOURCE_MEDIA_TYPE: = {Size=1:15}
[ audio book card electronic fiche film magazine
manuscript map newspaper photo tombstone video ]
A code, selected from one of the media classifications choices above, that indicates the type of material in which the referenced source is stored.
FH V4 enforces this definition for 'Media', as can be seen (only) on the All tab of the Source Property Box.  Thus I think your suggested search-and-replace is probably the only solution for what appear essentially to be Source Types (not recognized in GEDCOM 5.5). Incidentally, it is pleasing to note that Simon has now increased FH's GEDCOM compatibility by correctly handling the CALN tag as can be seen (only) on the All tab of the Source Property Box as 'Identification' (under 'Repository').
Sadly (not very) FH4's handling of Events Recorded in the Source Record are not quite in accord with the GEDCOM 5.5 definition: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ... S_RECORDED which allows a list of repeated (limited) values in a single instance, as well as repeated instances of one of the allowed values (the only option available in FH4).
EVENTS_RECORDED: = {Size=1:90}
[
, ]
An enumeration of the different kinds of events that were recorded in a particular source. Each enumeration is separated by a comma. Such as a parish register of births, deaths, and marriages would be BIRT, DEAT, MARR.
I hope this helps.

Thanks so much, Jane, for the advice and offer of help.  Will take you up on it later. On Wednesday will be offsite of computer usage for about two weeks. Wish it were a vacation but no such luck.  Perhaps by then some kind soul will see another easier solution.

BTW, I just now got bitten by the 'upside down virus' - see my post elsewhere.

Hi Jane,

I'm still looking for a way to get my 'source types' in FH.  As noted previously 'there's a ton of sources'.  I'm not sure what I would need to send to you to work with.

Most of the UDF's I believe are child/parent relationships which apparently FH doesn't recognize the format used by Family Treemaker.  I  have 5752 UDF's so am obviously not going to go through all of them.

I have the original gedcom that I created from Family Treemaker to convert to FH.  Would that be what you are looking for?  If so, how do I get it to you?

Many thanks for any assistance that you can provide.

Yes, send me the original GEDCOM file to janetaubman at gmail.com

I won't be able to look at it for few days as we have a busy weekend ahead.
