broken multimedia links

Post by miles » 07 May 2009 18:30

I have just upgraded to V4 and am mystified as to how to correct broken multimedia links.  On examining the links (working with external file links) I find a file structure which is a mixture of what i have now (Vista) and what I had a year ago on my old computer (XP) and even when I try to edit the path in the records window, the files do not open.  Oddly enough one of my images does open, but I am at a loss to understand why it does when all the rest do not.  Does one really have to start from the beginning again and enter each image individually??
I am uncertain about the Project file - I have always kept my images in a separate directory so that the small gedcom file could be backed up on a memory stick each time I use the datatbase.  Can I continue to do this if I place all the images in the media file?

I wonder if you already had some broken links before you moved to v4 but that you just hadn't spotted it before. The first thing I would do is just choose 'File->Gedcom File Tasks->Open Gedcom File' and then open your original file (i.e. not the one in the project folder, the one you used in v3.1) and check that all your images are linked correctly in that.

I guess they may have been broken previously. I have managed to repair a few of the links by changing the path in the individual record screen image by image and I suspect that there is no no quicker way of doing this.

If the originals are all the same folder you can 'find' them at the folder level just right click on the folder rather than the file.
