Family Historian User Group

Having been stung in the past by upgrades I am hesitant to part with my money if there is no significant benefit. Also I suspect from seeing this forum that there needs to be the usual .1 upgrade to make things work. So I wont upgrade until 4.1 is released.
V4 still is missing features that I would like.
So for those who have upgraded is it worth it or shall I stick at version 3?[smile]

A lot will depend on your use of FH as to if the new version is cost effective for you.

Since I have more than one computer at home, I've installed the 30-day trial of V4 on the new computer. I plan to use it for a couple of weeks and then decide if I want to upgrade or not. If the answer is 'no' my working installation of 3.1.2 is still on the old machine, unsullied by any changes demanded by V4.

I realize not everyone has that luxury, but since I do, why not make use of it?

(Just thought I would mention it for those who might be considering putting FH on a laptop to take to record offices, etc. but hadn't done so yet.)

I've done that too.  Another advantage is that you can experiment with your own data that you are familiar with without messing up the original.

Can't you just install it in a different location on the same machine? Then have both the old and the new version available?

Sorry scrub that, just found out that you can't have two versions on the same computer. Very weird. First software package I have ever used that stops you having multiple versions on the one computer, very weird.

No, I try to avoid it as much as possible.

I'm strongly considering reverting to V3 -

1. The project window that appears can't be closed at start-up is a ******* nuisance, I don't want to start a project I want to open gedcom files. Why can't I go straight to the record window and go FILE, OPEN... Please make the opening of the Project Box at start up optional

2. The Focus window is a waste of space, one of the main reasons for picking FH in the first place is that it didn't have anything resembling the Focus Window but had the Record Window instead. At least you can insure that it opens up in the Record Window not the Focus Window.

a) If you only have one main project make your Project the Default (Tools>Preferences>Startup)
b) On Tools>Preferences>Startup make sure 'Display the Records window...' is checked.

If you have more than one project to work on then it is just as easy to click on the Project window than go to File> Open, IMHO.

If you have no projects, simply set a gedcom file as your default file to open and you won't see the project dialogue
