changing file paths amp; saving gedcom

Hi, I have 2 questions that I feel I should know the answers to, but don't.
First question is how to change the file paths for multimedia. Specifically, in the past I decided to put my multimedia on a CD and the file path was therefore D:(folderpicture name....) Now I want to keep my pictures in my project folder on my C drive. In version 4 I know how to add new pictures and get them into the media folder but I can't find how to link to my existing photos and reset the file path. I have tried working with external links but it can't change the file path. Have I got to start again and put them on afresh?
Next question: are the pictures actually in the media file or is it just a link? Can I now delete the original folders they came from to save duplicate photos all over the place? Also, can I save the project as a whole entity and it will include the pictures as well as the gedcom?
What confuses me is that I open the file from the projects window, and do whatever, but at the end when it prompts me to backup it goes to what looks like my original gedcom folder. Is it the same gedcom just linked or have I now 2 separate files? Am I saving to the wrong version?
Sorry, this has turned into several questions! Any help most appreciated. Heather [confused]
