Scottish descendents

Post by Lester » 01 Apr 2004 09:50

Hello

I have got quite a detailed family history from my father's side, and know that he had brother's and sisters. How would I go about finding all the children from my grandfather, given that by 1901 they had 3 children (indicated from census records) having married in 1897. I know he had a sister, who must have been born later than 1901 but no other details. I think my father was the youngest of the family (1914). I just need to know the methodology of how to proceed from here and find all the brothers and sisters; do you search for names based on the grandfather and grandmother and place of birth?

I'm sure this is a very basic question, but I would like to make the data in Family Historian as complete as possible. It's a shame that we cannot get access to the later census records!

Thanks

Lester

Are you living in England or Scotland? I don't know if Scottish library Archive/Research facilities have the BMD records on fiche but that is probably a good starting point.
Look for births from 1897 0nwards.

If you are looking for scottish ancestors then take a look at the Scotlands People Website http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It costs £6 for 30 credits. You can search and view images of births deaths and marriages in the statutory registers with some restriction on the newest available as some are still being digitised i.e. Statutory Births are from 1855 - 1903 at the moment.

OPR records can also be searched however you cannot view the images as yet.

Both the statutory and OPR searches give you the GROS Ref No so that you can look up the original if you wish at General Register House in Edinburgh.

The search engines on this site are quite good and it records what you have looked at so you can go back and look at it again without using further credits in the future.

Depending on how common the surname is you can search the statutory births by using the surname selecting both male and female births and limit the years born i.e. use the start year as the year of marriage and the end year as say plus 20 years [depending on how close the marriage year is to 1903 as this is the last year of births that is online].

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards
