Has anyone visited the new 1837online site at http://www.1837online.com yet?

Any first immprssions?

My first observation is do not try to print the results of a search. I did a search on a recent death certificate (2002) and when I printed if off the right hand side was missing!

this is probably the feature of IE which chops off the right hand side of the page.

If you change the printer to landscape this normally fixes the problem.

The point is that you should not have to change print settings. The page should be set up to print in portrait - which the majority of people have as the default.

At the end of the day this is a new site and this should have been catered for - other sites handle without problems.

Have you e-mailed them to tell them about the problem?

The way the portal software I use deals with the problem is to provide the little printer symbols to show the page with out screen formating. There is one at the top of this page just above. The post reply button.

I used it this morning for a specific entry which was OK but I noticed that if you are trawling through a series of quarters on closing the deja view window to go back to the search results the windows you have already looked at no longer appear in red to show you have been and looked there already which I think will be confusing.

I can't even login in to the site!

It appears, although the technical staff haven't confirmed it yet, that if you enter an email address with a '.info' suffix it is not recognised as a valid email address.

It leaves a bit to be desired, I'm afraid. Let's hope they sort it out soon.

I've used it twice recently. There is a warning on the site tour somewhere to print recent things in landscape. I've found it quite useful but a bit tedious to use, it would be better if they could index on at least one more character so that you don't waste units on wasted views. I've also tried to order certificates on-line, don't know if this will be successful.

Finally managed to get my login sorted - 1 week, 2 emails & 3 phone calls later!

Now I'm 'in' I think the site has improved on it's earlier version.

I'm new to FH, etc. Just got my copy from Amazon UK and very VERY happy so far. (Thanks for your advice, Simon)

Anyway, YES I have tried out the 1837online site. I bought 50 units for 5 pounds (they then gave me 5 units free) and then realised almost immediately that it is virtually useless for what I wanted - you can only view the indexes, not the actual certificates. One of my gripes is why do I have ORDER certificates at 7 pounds+ a throw when all I want to do is simply LOOK at them - wouldn't mind paying 50p a go for something like that.

So, anyway, I'm finding the 1837 site very frustrating (though it's not the money - I don't mind wasting five pounds so long as I learn from my mistakes).

I had hoped to be able to use the site to find out stuff like my great great grandmother's MAIDEN name (and thus continue further up the tree). I know when she was born within 2 years and I know her husband's name. I even know where she was born (info from the UK 1901 census). However, none of this information will help me find her maiden name. Or will it??

That said, I was delighted to stumble upon the free 1881 UK census site at familyresearch.org.

for a maiden name, you need the birth certificate of one of her children.

You can also use the indexes at FreeBMD which are the same information as 1837 online except they are not yet complete.

Personally I always buy certificates for know ancestors as it is a good way of confirming the information.

Once you have the maiden name you can use it to cross reference marriage certificates before purchase
