V4 nbsp;- upside down text

Post by Cathy » 26 Apr 2009 17:29

I have installed the V4 trial (to a computer using XP, which did not already have V3 running) and noticed that in the occupation and place fields of the Property Box, the text appears upside down.

From the Sample Project file:

I was wondering if this a problem with the programme, or is there a setting I can change to fix this?

Thanks,

Cathy.

That's a new one on me.

Please could you try going to the options button, far right and try customising the main tab and hit the installation settings button to see if that fixes it?

Very Strange, I have checked my V4 and they are OK.

Is it all the fields on the right or only some of them.

Is any one else seeing this?

It only seems to be occupation and place - the note on the right is the correct way up:

The places are also upside down in the detail tab - and in the facts tab, but only in the field, not the list:

Please could you try changing the font to see if that helps?

Presumably it makes no difference if you resize the property window to make it very big (or very small)?

Resizing the window has no effect.

I've had a play with some different fonts and sizes, which does produce some interesting (weird!) results.

Using Ariel, Maiandra GD, Palatino Linotype, or Times New Roman (any size) makes the occupation and place boxes completely blank until highlighted with the cursor.

Most of the other fonts come out upside down in size 10.

Increasing to size 12, Comic Sans MS comes out the right way up, all the others (except for those exceptions above) come out upside down.

Increasing to size 14 gives a range of other fonts which appear the right way up, including Kristen ITC, MS Sans Serif, and Tempus Sans ITC (as well as Comic Sans MS still).

Working with size 14 font isn't ideal, as a lot of text is too big for the boxes, but it's definitely an improvement on reading upside down!

Just discoverd I was wrong before: Ariel, Maiandra GD, Palatino Linotype, or Times New Roman only disappear from 14 point upwards (it's like they're too big for the box) and are upside down size 12 or below.

Oh I'm sorry, but I found this one just soooo funny

[lol][cry][lol][cry][lol][cry][lol]

upside down text! I had to check it wasn't posted on the 1st April.

Just imagine the ribbing the developer will be getting from his mates! I'm sure it will get fixed soon.

Cathy thanks so much for your hard work on this one. I am sure it will help in tracking the problem.

@David - now now poor Cathy is working hard on this so it's not nice to laugh.

This did not come up in any of the beta testing, so my guess is there is some odd setting in windows some where.

It's not being consistent - I closed the programme down and when I opened it up again, increasing the font size changed straight from upside down to invisible in all cases.

OK another suggestion that's probably wide of the mark and going to get us nowhere..!

Under Display properties (right-click on desktop and click properties), under the settings tab, click Advanced and then under the General Tab is the DPI setting set to 'Normal size (96 DPI)'? (I think this may be the same as looking under Display Properties->Appearance->Font Size).

Please could you both post details for the OS's you are running.

Cathy I know you are running XP do you know which version and what service packs etc?

Also any chance either machine started life with Windows 98?

When you were running FH yesterday, did you have any other software open or previously used which you did not use prior to running FH?

Mine is:
Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3.

I am now occasionally getting the text the right way up and normal size by working with the box as floating instead of docked, but it's not at all consistent, and there's no apparent reason for the change.

As to other programmes, I've had my internet browser open when working with it today, but yesterday when I first reported the problem, it had been the sole programme I was using and I wasn't even connected to the internet at the time I was using it.

Cathy, still trying to gather as much help as we can for Calico, I am not sure if it will work, but if you can could you try running FH in safe mode to see what it does with the text.
