Half Brothers/Sisters Not Showing

Post by akaz2 » 29 Mar 2004 18:42

My Grandfather had two wives, the first wife had 7 Children, my grandfather got remarried after the first wife died.  He went on to have 11 more children.  In this  second group is my father.  Why do the first lot of children not show up on the family tree diagram, but show up as my half uncles/aunts on the relations report??  Do not understand as my husband has a half brother and he shows up from a generation down.

Half Brothers/Sisters Not Showing

Simon Orde Posted this to the list, is this the problem you are seeing?
a half-brother certainly is a relative and he should show up. There is a 'feature' of the All Relatives diagram which is that it won't show siblings and other spouses of ancestors, if the ancestor has no recorded parent. It also won't show children by non-ancestral spouses (known or unknown) if the ancestor's own parents aren't recorded. I would guess that the problem is that you haven't recorded your grandmother's parents. You only need to add one. If you don't now anything about them, just leave the name blank (or use '?' or whatever you prefer), and I think you should find that the missing half-brother will appear.

Thanks for the reply, but as far as I can see that is not my problem.  Could it have something to do with there being 7 half brothers/sisters and 11 brothers/sisters and they just don't fit onto a diagram chart?  They are definately showing up everywhere else!

I presume you are using the all relatives diagram?

Have you tried showing all desendants from each ancestor rather than from the root?

Shows up on all descendants from Grandfather - who is the Father of 18 children (2 wives).

Not on all relatives for the children of Grandfather.  Just shows actual Brothers/Sisters not half Brothers/Sisters.

Can you just confirm that the problem occurs when you are showing an 'All Relatives' diagram with you as the root.  You are not seeing your grandfather's first wife and children by his first wife?  Is that correct?

Can you also confirm that you have recorded a parent (mother, father or both) for your grandfather and that this parent is showing in the All Relatives diagram?

If you have done that, you should definitely be seeing both of his wives.  If you are still not seeing the children by his first wife, open the Diagram Options dialog (right-click on the diagram background and select Diagram Options).  Make sure that the Generations Down value is 2 or higher (depends how many generations you want to see, coming down from your ancestor).  You might also consider setting 'counting down from...' to 'Diagram Root'.

If you have done all that you definitely should be seeing both of your grandfather's wives and his children by both of them.
