Adding a Global Source

Post by Debbie » 28 Mar 2009 15:54

Does anyone know of a way of adding a source to a lot of individuals in one go? I am hoping that there is a way I can click on a bunch of people in tree view and say 'add source - info obtained from such and such'.
Hope this makes sense!

Adding a Global Source

If you are merging in data you can add a source then, or if it's new data you can add a source using auto-source.

There is a trick in the KB to add a source to all the records in your file.

You could probably do a split and merge to add a source to all persons in the merge, how ever remember you will need to make a decision on the level you want the source at.

Another option is to turn on Auto-Source, and use 'paste Source' to add to each record or fact.

Adding a Global Source

Thank you for your helpful suggestions Jane. These are people already in my database, which I added a long time ago from other researchers. I have a record of the source in the note field for each individual, but I am trying to be more consistent and set up a source for the informant and attach the source to each name.

I did think about splitting them out and merging, but would that give them different record IDs do you know?

Thinking about it, I probably need to go into each record anyway and delete the note field and at the same time I could use the 'paste source' to the name field. Brilliant idea - I had forgotten about that feature! I'm still on my learning curve!
