Sources and citations - a tool

Post by Rgemini » 05 Mar 2009 21:26

I found myself having trouble keeping track of my sources and citations so I've put together a tool to help. If it would help any of you other FH users, you are welcome to make use of it too.

It's a couple of web pages, one which loads a copy of a GEDCOM file and the main one which displays the sources and citations and how they are referenced by individuals and family records.

I've built it so that only the browser that loads a GEDCOM can display the results, so your data privacy is maintained if you make use of it. The data is only retained for a period of your choice after your final access (one hour, day, week or month).

If you do make use of it, please let me know what you think. I will provide help and support if required.

How to use it: load your GEDCOM file through http://www.rgemini.me.uk/famhist/ged_sources_load.php. Use http://www.rgemini.me.uk/famhist/ged_sources.htm to explore your file.

You will see 4 panels. Top left is a list of sources. Click a source title to load the details of that source record into the top right panel and a list of citations in the bottom left panel (individuals and family records linked to the source). Click a citation to see its details in the bottom right panel.

There is an option to switch the top left panel to a list of individuals or a list of families. In this case the bottom left panel shows the sources referred to by the chosen individual or family.

I'm sure it must be possible to use FH tools to achieve the same effect, although I'm not sure how to do it. I use the tool to identify what needs attention but you can't beat FH itself for maintaining and reporting on your family trees.

I'm getting the following error message when I try to load the gedcom file:

Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move '/tmp/phpViI2o7' to './gedcoms/H1236331675.ged' in /homepages/21/d89226701/htdocs/famhist/ged_sources_load.php on line 38

I also get an error when trying to upload (using Firefox 3.0.6):

'Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move '/tmp/phpwkIvk3' to './gedcoms/D1236343550.ged' in /homepages/21/d89226701/htdocs/famhist/ged_sources_load.php on line 38'

So it's not just a 'Gerry specific' problem.

David.

The problem was that I had reached my disk space quota limit. [frown]

So I have done some housekeeping and everything seems to be OK now. You'd think 600Mb would be plenty of space, but it's amazing how quickly family photos can fill it up [rolleyes]

Sorry about that!

By the way, the file upload can take a couple of minutes if the GEDCOM file is large, even over broadband. Mine has loaded OK though and it's getting on for a megabyte in size.

Hi,

I sucessfully loaded a 1 mb file but it baulked at my main file which is now well over 2 mb. However, it looks to be a useful tool and thanks for sharing it.

Hi

My file is just over 2 meg and I got this message

Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 33030144) (tried to allocate 44 bytes) in /homepages/21/d89226701/htdocs/famhist/ged_file_parser.php on line 38

Thanks for letting me know - I'll find out how to increase the available memory, if I can, and let you know the result here.

I've reworked the loading routines and data storage approach. The revised version seems to perform quite a lot faster on my 1Meg GEDCOM file. As before, I am happy to provide support to anyone who finds this useful and would welcome any feedback.

Hi there

I used this successfully yesterday, but today when I try I receive the following message:

Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 33030144) (tried to allocate 45 bytes) in /homepages/21/d89226701/htdocs/famhist/ged_classes_inc.php on line 106

I think that the idea is brilliant, but is it possible to download the code and use it locally, rather than upload to you.

Regards
Robin

Thanks for letting me know. As far as I can tell, this looks like a 1-off problem. It's not caused by exceeding my disk space allocation, which was my first thought. The line with the error is where I assemble the data for storage before writing it to disk, and I think I have some options for optimising that. I'll post an update when that's been done.

The code is written in PHP as a web server application so isn't something that most users would be able to run locally. That said, I have no objection to putting the source into the public domain if anyone wants to make use of it. Let me know!

Yes please to the source code --I've got a web server on my PC to develop my own website, so PHP is not a problem.

Thanks

I would welcome the opportunity to have the source code to run it on a local server

hi there

I still cannot make use of your utility on your server, so how do do I contact you to obtain the code in order to use it locally

Apologies for the delay, but I have now zipped the Sources Explorer code and put it at http://www.rgemini.me.uk/famhist/sourcesexplorer.zip. I am releasing this under the GPL3 licence.

All the files reside in one folder. I will do my best to provide support if you hit problems.

Hello,
Can anyone point me in the direction of a web server application to allow me to run this application?

Tom Beckham
