Diagram text schemes

I am finding it difficult to assemble a complete set of information on how to make custom text schemes for diagrams.
I have printed out all I can find from the help files (especially Understanding Data References & Understanding Functions) and also Chapters 7 and 12 from the manual. I have also searched this forum, perhaps not perfectly.
The manual on page 66 says,
'This example illustrates most of the basic principles of creating text schemes. There are more subtleties if you are adventurous. You can, for example, add conditions at the start of text template line. ...... A good policy is to look at the supplied standard templates which use these techniques, and try to understand how they work.'
I am trying to be adventurous but I need help as follows:
1. Where do I find a detailed list of the conditions one can build up? The examples gives in the manual {if no spouses} and {if male} are fine but are there more conditions I can construct? Can one make a condition to operate if more than x generations above the diagram root?
2. In one text scheme discussed in this forum I found the use of '' which I have used successfully in a function to calculate a relationship but I cant find where there is a list of such useful devices
