Diagram text schemes

Post by mcws » 20 Mar 2004 12:19

I am finding it difficult to assemble a complete set of information on how to make custom text schemes for diagrams.

I have printed out all I can find from the help files (especially Understanding Data References & Understanding Functions) and also Chapters 7 and 12 from the manual. I have also searched this forum, perhaps not perfectly.

The manual on page 66 says,
'This example illustrates most of the basic principles of creating text schemes. There are more subtleties if you are adventurous. You can, for example, add conditions at the start of text template line. ...... A good policy is to look at the supplied standard templates which use these techniques, and try to understand how they work.'

I am trying to be adventurous but I need help as follows:

1. Where do I find a detailed list of the conditions one can build up? The examples gives in the manual {if no spouses} and {if male} are fine but are there more conditions I can construct? Can one make a condition to operate if more than x generations above the diagram root?
2. In one text scheme discussed in this forum I found the use of '' which I have used successfully in a function to calculate a relationship but I cant find where there is a list of such useful devices

I don't know of any conditions other than those used in the example schemes. I will try and find out for you, but I may be a day or so I have visitors tomorrow.

There doesn't appear to have been any follow up on the use of conditions. I think I may need to use one in constructing a diagram text scheme. My problem is this: how do you ensure birth and death fields are included in the diagram even if no date has been defined, i.e. I require a placeholder. At present if no date has been entered, then no line is output. This would also be valid for other fields that contain nulls.

Hi

text scheme conditions are pretty simple and include the follow parts only:

male
female
duplicates
no duplicates
spouses
no spouses

e.g. {if male & no duplicates & spouses}

(no) spouses and (no) duplicates relate to your spouse display options at the time.  ie. the spouses condition is true if and only if your displaying spouses.  Duplicates is true if and only if your displaying duplicates (and if you really want to, it is possible to get both spouses and duplicatates to display at the same time).

I don't believe there is currently any way to force text to be output if a birth date (or other field) is NULL.  Sorry about that.

Thanks, Simon.

I'll submit this as a Wish List item[grin]
