Folder to Keep FH files in
Hello, I have just joined the User Group and this is my first question. I am currently using Family Historian within the 30day trial period (will certainly be purchasing the key).
I have been using FTM and imported as a GED file my data from there. However my FH file, when I click on 'Open' brings up a Family Tree Maker box with their folders and my GED file.
I would like to save all my FH files in a FH folder.
How do I create such a folder and how do I make it a sub folder of Family Historian.
Hope you can help. Many thanks.

Played around with Windows Explorer and managed to drag and drop my file over to Family Historian Program Folder.
When I first tried to open the file it again popped up with FTM box but redirecting the search to FH did the trick. Now opens where I want it too.
Thanks for looking

Welcome.
1. DO NOT store your files in the program folder of FH. Windows tends to be un-happy if you do this, especially Vista. I think what you actually did was drop a .ged file on to the FH icon.
2. It sounds as if FTM has the 'association' for .GED files you can over-ride this in widows, if you let me know what version of windows I can do some instructions.
3. I would recommend creating a folder in your My Documents or Documents folder for your gedcom file and store all linked documents below it. See http://fhug.rjt.org.uk/wiki/how_to:organise_your_files for more information.
4. Once you have set up your file, the alternate method for opening your file is to go to Tools/Preferences and the File/Save tab to default FH to always open your main file.

Hello Jane, excellent link, I have bookmarked it. Also went into My Documents, created a folder for Family Historian, then a sub folder for MyFileGED and put my first file in there. Will add my others as I convert them and bring them over.
Looking forward to using this software.

Hello Jane, I have got as far as Tools Preferences File Load/Save and have ticked the box to enable auto-save but cant see where to make FH the default to open the file. Is it the box 'Exclude other applications extensions to Gedcom'?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
