I am aware of the sense in backing up to an external medium but in the meantime, I now have successive back ups in my folder on hard disk. Am I right that I can delete versions say 1-9 after I save version 10?

You might want to consider the difference between backups and archives - backups you don't need to keep, however if you make an archive you would keep it forever.
You might make an archive when you have done a particular piece of work on your tree, or published a website - in this case you might keep a backup forever attached to that version of your research.
It is also good practice (he said doing none of these!) to keep long term backups so you can go back in time, e.g every year and within a year every quarter. This is the kind of thing IT environments do

Absolutely, in fact there's no need to keep any of them unless you want to, for example to revert to how you had it last week in case you mess it up somehow.ermintrude said:

Always a good idea to make a copy of the latest and put it somewhere else occasionally though, in case of melt-down.
