For any one individual is it possible to list notes in chronological order regardless of whether they are family or local notes

Good question.
The gedcom format seems to allow support for 'change dates' (CHAN). These appear to be used by FH to record when an INDIvidual record was last modified. It would be useful to see the CHAN values. Can the CHAN fields be exposed?
1 CHAN
2 DATE 25 NOV 2008
3 TIME 20:46:38
Does FH support CHAN fields for notes or just INDI records?

I suspect you are actually looking to sort the notes by the event dates?
If so which reports have you tried all ready if your notes are attached to events (which will obviously give them dates of the events) then the individual summary and narrative should be in good order.

I think I have maybe not explained myself very well.
I list my census information for each individual in notes. ie 1891 Census. Apple Cottage, Cornwall. Then I put the text of the census in the Text from Source box, If someone is single I enter it as a local note. However, when they marry I enter it as a family note so their spouse has the same census info. FH lists the local notes all together in chronological order and all the family notes altogether also in chronological order. This means that, say, a husband dies and the widow is on the next census, she once more becomes a local note which instead of being listed in chronological order, gets listed with the local notes and I can't move it

Ah, I see, no you won't be able to sort notes currently, but why are you not recording Census information correctly using the Census events, with or with out Gedcom census?

Sorry, but I have to take issue with 'correctly'. As always in these discussions, it depends what you're trying to achieve. IMHO censuses are better treated as sources rather than events. Although obviously a historical event, they are not what most people would consider an event in their lives... most people on them were probably unaware that it happened. As family history events we record where people are living, who with and what they're doing, what name they were using, etc. not the fact that they were counted. That's about records, not about people.Jane said:

Yes Chris point taken, but as I read the post, they are creating a note for each census, it would therefore seem more sense to use an event Census or Residence which would provide a date allowing the data to be sorted by FH.

You're right Jane (and sorry hellfire for highjacking the thread off-topic)... I think the real point is that whatever event or events you use to record what you've found on the census, you have to do it in FH for the individuals rather than the family.

Thank you Chris & Jane. I do prefer to record a census as a source, it also looks better when I upload the Gedcom to my TNG powered website. The joy of FH is that it can be as simple or as complicated as you want and it still works
Having said that I think it would be a useful feature to be able to sort notes no matter whether individual or family
I will experiment with recording some as an event. I'm afraid I haven't got my head round Gedcom Census yet
