Finding people in Manchester

Post by bodger99 » 09 Mar 2004 00:20

I have a late grandmother whose family and her were DEFINITELY living at a given address in Cheetham (Hill), Manchester at the time of the 1901 census. Needless to say, none of them were registered. (Surprse, surprise!).

However, I do remember vaguely, reading something somewhere about how it was possible to find people in Manchester specifically, by some other means - involving parish records maybe?

Anyone know if my memory is playing tricks, or IS there a way of doing this?

TIA

I don't know of anything specific, but http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/
covers Births,Marriages and Deaths for Lancashire.

I suggest you contact the people at the Manchester Records Office
http://www.gmcro.co.uk

If you're able to, it's well worth a visit as they have such a lot of local information.

Parish records for churches will tell you if they were Christened, married or buried in Manchester not wheter they were living there at a specific time. If your ancestors were in business they might be in a trade dirctory such as the ones produced by Kelly.

The subscription fee for Ancesrty.com (for 1891 census and more for England) costs $99.95 US which is about £55. I Have found it very useful.

I assume you have searched the whole of the 1901 Census, with different spellings etc., as, don't forget, if they were visiting other people or working away, they could be in different areas of the country. If they were in Scotland, they would be registered anyway. If they were in 'transit' on the day/night of the Census, likewise they wouldn't be registered.
