Printing diagrams

Post by vimira » 29 Nov 2008 13:55

I am planning to publish (hard copy)the connected family trees I have, possibly with my Family Society, as they are of particular interest to others. I'll also be including a fair bit of text.
For the last couple of weeks I have been going thru all the set ups, specs etc, but still fail to get diagrams on A4 size which are anywhere near legible.
For eg moving families further down the page spreads it a bit, but I can't seem to move lines vertically, then horizontally - I am now thinking this is not possible?
Can I change the surnames to same size as first names for eg, which may allow more space?
I am wondering if V4 will be of any help in producing diagrams. Also will it be poss to move to something like Word where I'll be able to make more changes to the finished version? or is there a publishing software system that could do this?
Perhaps I'm asking for the impossible here[cry]

Real diagrams at A4 are seldom successful, if you reduce the information to just names and dates then this may be fine, personally if you are sending information to societies I would use Ancestor or descendant reports or family group sheets, as reports lend themselves much better to printing A4.

If you really want to share information using diagrams try left to right views or reducing the number of generations down from each ancestor if you are using All Relative diagrams.

Thanks Jane
Yes I am reducing the number of generations, & having diagrams for those as well, but it is still not satisfactory. Also left to right is not much better, & I do need to include specific birth, bap data etc with each name
The narrative reports are very good, but I need diagrams to make relationships clearer

You can change the sizes in the Text Scheme editor.

You could save them as EMF files, but word won't be able to edit the diagrams.

Reports can be saved as .RTF files which can be edited in Word.

Drawing trees by hand is pretty tricky but Visio or similar might be able to do it.

I've searched the text scheme editor but don't see where you can change surname from upper to lower case. Is this facility in V3?

You didn't say anything about lowercase previously. Just change the preference/general tab option to show surnames in lowercase, assuming you have entered the surnames in lowercase.
