Flags on Sources

Hi
I have attempted to follow the tutorial '
http://www.fhug.org.uk/flash/fhflags.html' which shows how to add custom flags. I'm trying to add a birth flag to people who I have a birth certificate for. I have created a custom query to select the sources containing 'birth certificate' but when I try and add a flag, it gives the message 'you can only set flags on individual records'.
Can anyone help me please?! Thank you.

Flags can only be applied to people, you need to build a query on the sources attached to the people rather than to the sources.

Thanks for your reply Jane. I have now created a custom query on the individual birth source, searching for the short title containing the letters BC ie INDI.BIRT[1].SOUR[1]>ABBR%contains'BC'
This returns three individuals with a birth certificate. However, I know that there are six individuals with a birth cert as a source of the dob.
Is it something to do with the fact that the three not showing have the birth cert as the second source?

Hi Debbie,
You would need to add another line to your query adding
INDI.BIRT[1].SOUR[2] ..etc...
to capture the second source explicitly.
If you have defined a Type in the source (which I find is a good idea), you can use
Add if %INDI.BIRT[1].SOUR[1]>_TYPE% matches 'Birth Certificate'
Which admittedly is not a lot less typing but I find can be more accurate. Again, you would need to add
Add if %INDI.BIRT[1].SOUR[2]>_TYPE% matches 'Birth Certificate'
and so on to capture where the source is the second item. I don't think there is a way around this - I'm sure I will be corrected on that though!

Adrian

Thanks for your help Adrian - I have to admit it is a bit more complicated than I thought it would be and it's all very well if you know which source you want to flag, it might be a bit more difficult with loads of records! Perhaps I am trying to run before I can walk, since I am still learning the basics of this software!
I think its useful to try out some of the features early on though, since I can make sure I enter information in a logical and consistent way to take advantage of the more advanced stuff later on. I now know how to use the 'type' field effectively, so that's a help. Thanks again both of you, I'm sure I'll be back!
