Adding family query, please

Post by charybdis » 07 Oct 2008 16:42

I would be grateful for any assistance that can be offered as I am stumped.
The scenario:
Totally blank FH, so start with male, then add spouse no1, then add spouse no2. For spouse no2 it is her second marriage, so add another spouse for her.
Problem:
Spouse does not appear at her side, it appears at the bottom of the page with another box of her and there is a yellow weird ribbon thingy attached to it.[eek]
Is there any way I can have spouse no2 with her spouse no1 at her side, i.e.
sp1 = man = sp2 = sp1
If not, can I get rid of that horrid ribbon thingy. Sorry, my technical terms are none existant, but I have searched and can not find any reference to it anywhere. Thank you if you have taken the time to read this. Thjere are children with all marriages. (people are soooo thoughtless [lol])

Hi,
  I assume that you are talking about on an diagram ? The apperance of the diagram depends on who you have centered the diagram on, the ribbon is showing you that the same person is being reported twice, once as part of each family.
   what you need to do is look at the different diagram types, centering them on the different individuals until you see the style that you want.

Thank you for replying. I tried to do this as I have only put these four on to begin and cannot do it without that long coloured thing going to the bottom. I did not want it to appear twice, but I suppoise I will have to lump it, or not put the first marriage of the man's second spouse on at all [cry]

I did a test on the parameters you gave and the ribbon only showed up on the Everyone diagram.  If you try other types of diagrams based either on an individual or on a family there will be no ribbon although everybody in the database will not be shown.
When your database gets much larger you will find, as I did,  that the ribbons are a very useful tool.
This link shows an example where the duplication of the same couple may not have been as noticeable if the ribbons were not generated.

Thank you for that, John. I will leave them out for now and consider adding later when it gets large and see how I feel. It does not look so bad as you say, but I find them more of a distraction than a help at the moment. Maybe FH will have an update one day and allow this to happen without duplications. [smile]
