LP5 Error Code

Post by John6740 » 21 Aug 2008 10:13

Has anyone come across the LP5 Error Code.

On trying to run FH, a dialog box displays this message -
'Error while unpacking program, code LP5. Please report to author'.
The program doesn't load.

Simon of FH was helpful but said it wasn't a problem with FH but it could be caused by an anti-virus program. I contacted Panda Anti Virus and they provided me with a procedure for testing and proving it was not their software at fault. It wasn't.

So far, the only way I have found to get round this problem is by uninstalling FH and reinstalling. Not something I want to do regularly.

I feel between the devil and the deep blue sea (sorry Simon), and haven't got much more hair to pull out. No other programs I use produce this error. If I can't load FH, it looks as if I'm going to have to find an alternative.

Any ideas please.

LP5 Error Code

A general google search for LP5 suggests this is a firewall/anti-virus problem, for lots of different software products, most of them seem to be CA based anti-spyware programs such as the AOL one.

Have you tried disabling or un-installing the virus checker/Anti Spy Ware/Firewall you are using temporarily to see if that stops FH failing. My guess is Simon is correct and it's a conflict with one of the above products. I have never used Panda so have no idea of the quality of their products, or their support.

I use the latest free version of AVG at home with no conflicts with FH

Thanks Jane.

I had to disable all the Panda options before FH would load. I then closed FH and enabled the Panda options, and FH still loaded OK. So presumably Panda does something at bootup.

I've installed AVG as you suggested. All works OK. My only comment is that downloading pages from the Web takes a lot longer with AVG than with Panda, but at least FH works now.

Thanks for your help.

John is that on Google Searches?

If so try turning off the Link Scanner, especially if you are on a dial up or slow broadband connection.

Thanks Jane.

Google search isn't too bad. It seems to be the pages full of text which load slower.

I'm connected via a local wireless system, so speed is faster than dial-up but slower than broadband, so anything that slows it down becomes very noticeable.

I'll try your suggestion.

Thanks

Not noticed a problem with speed on either PC, it could just be that AVG is monitoring the whole page before displaying it, where as you other software either only monitored downloads and not html content.

The first thing I noticed after upgrading AVG to version 8 is that browsing's noticably slower unless you switch off the link scanner (and that's on broadband). Irritating though that it then continuously appears to be in an error state, so you have to open it to see if it's otherwise working ok.

...but back to the original topic... We've had some trouble at work lately with users of perfectly well behaved programs that have been running happily for years starting to fail unpredictably with obscure error conditions apparently caused by interfering anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-popup or whatever systems that have been pre-installed on new machines. We've found it impossible to get any of the suppliers of such to help, and are reduced to advising users to uninstall things until the problem goes away (which it invariably does eventually).

Chris, go in to AVG Tools/Advanced and you can select ignore faulty conditions and tell it to ignore the link scanner etc.

Yes. I did uninstalled Panda before installing AVG.

Thanks for the hint on turning off faulty conditions.

For a matter of interest I have just done a complete PC scan with AVG and it took 3 hours 25 minutes (PC wasn't being otherwise used). With Panda it used to take just over 30 minutes. I wonder if that makes Panda more efficient or less acurate. Ummm. Perhaps we shall never know !!

One answer to your question is given at http://www.eset.com/products/compare-NO ... tition.php

I know that this is the marketing page of a competitor but it is probably close to the truth.

Yet again it seems to be that you get what you pay for.

Note I have no connection with ESET but I have just changed to NOD32 from McAfee and I find it much faster and better in general

Sorry a bit off topic, but re: disabling the link scanner in AVG8, I also discovered yesterday why Internet Explorer intermittently starts and immediately closes again when started from Favourites on the Windows Start menu. To cure this, go into IE, Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons and disable AVG Safe Search (unless of course you really want AVG to interfere with every web page you look at).

Following on from Chris's comment - I have just had fun with AVG - it behaved in a very peculiar way when downloading an update - and Word would not work afterwards - AVG had apparently seen a bit of Word as a virus - have decided to go over to Avast pro-tem having uninstalled AVG and gone back to a restore point before the last AVG download - pity as I liked AVG....

If you look at the this forum for AVG

http://freeforum.avg.com/

you will find that AVG8 has introduced all sorts of problems (functional and performance) and a LOT of people are moving to alternatives, as support and updates for the very good AVG7.5 are supposedly ending on 31 Aug 2008 (ie tomorrow).
AVAST seems a popular alternative.

LP5 Error Code

Still off my original thread, I uninstalled Panda Anti-Virus in favour of AVG. However AVG found the original Panda install file on my PC and decided it was a virus. Ummm !!!

I found AVG slowed my PC down considerably and was always in the way, even deciding which web sites I should or should not visit. I began to feel I was just a bystander.

I've now dumped AVG for ESET which works in the background without me being aware, and without loss of PC speed. Thanks to the FHUG member who recommended it.

I have AVG 8 - the paid for version - and am very content with it. It did slow things down until I discovered that it was doing a full scan every day. I changed that to once a week and so 6 days out of 7 everything works fine.

It certainly beats Norton - which I used to recommend (!) - but which latterly caused more problems that it solved and become 'bloatware'.
