Having just become the proud owner of an iphone, you know what would be really cool? An app whereby you can import a gedcom file so you can take your family tree with you. Very useful for trips to records offices etc. If it synced with FH, then even better!

The Microsoft Windows Mobile based phones already have applications for this, but I don't think there is one for the iPhone, as it's new and not compatible with anything else, if you can store and view web pages on it then you could just generate a web site and put the web pages on it.

Or as the iPhone is web enabled you could of course just put your data on a 'private' web site for you to access it that way.

Not quite the same I know, but the iTouch enables you to take any jpg images with you via iPhoto. So i take images of all my drawn family trees with me when I travel.

The fun part comes when you are able to connect the iTouch to someones TV and see the tree at a reasonable size.

I guess the iPhone also does this?? Don't know much about the iPhone but the ipod Itouch acts as a portable hard drive very nicely

MobileFamilyTree Brings Genealogy to iPhone

Synium Software has announced the release of MobileFamilyTree, a genealogy application for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch. It costs $4.99 and is available for download from the App Store.

You can synchronize the changes you make to your family's origins between an iPhone and a Mac using MobileFamilyTree.Designed as a complement of sorts to Synium's MacFamilyTree software, MobileFamilyTree enables you to keep track of your family roots and information. The software keeps all the changes you make on your iPhone in sync with MacFamilyTree files, and lets you view, add and edit information wherever you are.

Features include interactive lists for 'Persons' and 'Families,' and detailed information views with direct edit access. You can add and edit multiple 'Partners,' 'Children,' 'Events' and 'Notes.' The software is localized in English and German.

In order to have the Mac synchronization features, you'll also need MacFamilyTree 5.2.3 to be installed on your Mac.

For everyone's reference, there are two applications currently available for iPod touch (and I suppose iPhone) that deal with GED files (that appear in iTunes Store for me anyway).

They are called Shrubs ($5.99) and FamViewer ($17.99). Latter appears to be superior and I will probably purchase it and let you all know how it goes.

Anyone used either?

Well, I have bitten the bullet and purchased the software.

Installed and downloaded my GED file with no hassles at all. Easy to browse around, all the information is there at your finger tips, including sources. Will be interesting to see how things go when I use it when really need something like that in my pocket.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread but I really think Calico Pie should think about an App for the iphone.

Those using MacFamilyTree and Reunion software for Macs both have iphone apps.

As well as Famviewer, there are now other Gedcom viewers including Shrubs and Gedview.

Does anyone know which works best with Famly Historian or how we can get them to create their own App?

Maybe a survey of how many people would use such a facility might be useful (which to some extent is what the wishlist is!)

I for one have no aims to by an iphone, and where do you draw the line (plus how many developers are there in Calico?)

I was just about to post a thread when I saw this. Like the other interested parties, I would like to be able to carry my FH4 files around on my iPod Touch. So add my name to any poll.

DrDBW are you able to amend data from your device or just read it?

It is view only, it is not an editor.

There was a recent update, now it can display a family tree as well.

The way that IT is moving more and more is to on-line services where applications and data are accessed via the web (similar to the systems used by Genes reunited and ancestry). A web-app version of Family Historian (running on Calico Pie servers probably on a subscription basis) would allow Family Historian to be used by any PC, Mac, iPhone, etc. as long as they have web access. I think this would bring greater dividends that trying to write versions for all the various operating systems out there.

Nick's suggestion would be great but how far are we from it. In the meantime I have read the reviews on :-
1) Famviewer £8.99
2)Ged View £2.99
3) Shrubs £5.99

They are all read only, but the one characteristic that Shrubs over the others is the ability to make notes on individuals. If I want to take my Family History data to a library etc., for research purposes. Then being able to make notes, is fundamental. I cannot understand why any genealogy program would not include this. I have asked Fam Viewer Support whether they plan to introduce this in the future and await their response.

Gedview is editable, but not very easy to export from (and not very intuitive to import to either). However it is also possible (Although I've not tried it yet) to export only data changed after a specific date. So it would seem to be easy enough to export your changes trhen merge back into your original file.
Gedview also works wuite quickly (I had previuosly used ancestor viewer on a windows PDA, and that was v e r y slow)

Sorry to resurect an old thread but Ive just downlaoaded Gedview this evening on my Iphone.

I agree that finding out how to import your gedcomfile isnt intuitive but once you find out how to do it is a breeze and it took all of 10 seconds to download my family tree made in family historian onto the Iphone and it seems to have done it faultlessly.

Ive managed to edit a few records without any problems

one feature I realy like is being able to click on a place of birth and open up google earth which then gives you a satelite view of the location.

I can see it coming in handy next week when I have to attend a cousins funeral. Its going to be a large family affair so will be able to fill in lots of missing data

Very impressed by the app and for £2.99 you cant really go wrong

I totally agree with you David. My husband bought me an iTouch for Christmas and the first app I looked for was a family tree one, after reading about Gedview I downloaded it and think it is a brilliant app. I couldn't figure out how to import a gedcom from a website, but found importing one from my PC to my iTouch a breeze. This will come in very handy at family gatherings.

GedView import is identical to Shrubs and FamViewer. Export is via a tap of a button saying 'Export' and then a tap of a button saying 'Export Full Database' or the tap of a button saying 'Export Changes Since' after setting a date in the box below that button. Are you all crazy? My biggest problem is how to get my tree printed out without using 25 ft of paper. Family Historian does a brilliant job (as best it can) of displaying your tree on a proper-sized monitor. I think you are trying too hard to put it on your phone!

The free Ancestry app 'Tree To Go' is very good. Two things to bear in mind though, you have to have your tree uploaded to the Ancestry web site and you need wifi access to view the photos, events and notes in your tree.
