Make links to multimedia more robust

Post by rfj1001 » 11 Feb 2004 16:52

I keep my data on a portable hard drive - so I can use my desktop at home and my portable PC when out researching.

Unfortunately windows assigns different drive letters to the portable drive - and this throws up an error message 'Unable to locate or display picture' if you try to open a multimedia object - because FH is looking for a certain drive letter.

Any solution to this would be appreciated.

A couple of possibilities.
The first is to use the Work with external links to change the drive letter over, which will only take a second as you can change all the links at once.

The better solution is if both you machines are on Win 2000 or XP would be to force them to use the same drive letter.

With the removable drive plugged in.
On win 2000, go into Control panel then admin tools, then computer management. the storage then disk management. Right click on the removable drive and use the option to change the drive letter.

That way you can set both machines to use the same letter.

I don't have XP at home, but I suspect the actions are similar as long as your control panel is in Classic mode.

Not sure about the 'more robust' bit. I recently had a DVD drive fitted and because the chap who built my machne didn't have the correct connection cable, he had to disconnect the CD read drive and only connect the CD W/RW dive.
When I tried to use the LDS CDs they just wouldn't work at all.
Simple solution - re-name the drives in Control Panel then reboot.
Call a spade a shovel and it's the same thing!
