Individual Military History

Post by hf » 29 Mar 2008 10:08

I have the full military papers for a relative who gained the MM in 1918.
I am trying to decide the best way to record his military records (including postings, wounds, hospitalisation etc etc).
I wonder how others of you might have done this?

There are a couple of Military History fact sets in the downloads/fact sets area which have most of the common items.

I have a single source for each persons records, and then extract the information into standard tags where I can and use custom ones as required, using the source which has all the scanned documents attached.

Similar to Jane: I transcribe all of the various details of my military ancestors into one source e.g. 'Military Records of Jo Bloggs' and then as Jane suggests I have a number of custom 'facts' and standard ones, e.g. occupation, place of birth, might be mentioned at attestation.

If you use one source for the entire collection of records as suggested above, you can use 'where within source' to note which bit of information came from which document.

I have downloaded the suggested fact sheet but don't seem to be able to open it. It shows in the 'Custom' section but doesn't open with a window to allow entries.
Any thoughts please? It is likely that I am doing summat wrong but what I do not know.

Did they not install properly, I wonder?

Try this:

1) open Family Historian
2) choose an individual
3) right-click and choose 'Properties' to pop up the data-entry box
4) go to the events tab
5) hit the + button

You should see the facts and be able to choose them as needed. If not, please tell us what happens instead.
