Couple marry and have 1 child. father of child dies. mother remarries 5 years later . New husband adopts child.
I have listed the mother of child as having 2 husbands and first husband being the birth father of child.  How do I show that the 2nd husband has adopted the child, and that the child uses adopted fathers surname, but I would like to show that adopted child can also be shown in the marriage of her birth father, and also to be listed with her new siblings.  Is this possible without creating 2 individuals?[confused]

See
[wiki]faq:how_do_i_handle_people_with_multiple_names[/wiki]

for details on the name one.

To add the child to the second family, use the all tab or the records window, right click on the child and add a family as child. Select add to existing family,You will get a warning saying they already have one, but you can safely carry on, and then select the Mothers second marriage.

thanks for that Jane. It worked, but is there a way where I can show the child in the adopted fathers name and still keep her birth name with her birth father.

You could do some conditioning using flags, but it would probably be clearer to show both names in both places, by adding a second name line to diagrams

eg

%INDI.NAME[2]%

Working around similar issues:-

To get an adopted child to show in family trees of both birth and adoptive families, I need the child to have two parents - one of which I can give a relationship 'Adopted'.  I don't want to label the other relationship 'Birth' because that is the presumed default and consistency says all birth relationships should be labelled the same way.

But what I want to do is to:
1) show (for family trees involving the individual's birth family only) the fact that someone is adopted and the name of the family that adopted them (I could use the adopted event?)
2) show (for family trees involving the individual's adoptive family only) the fact that someone is adopted and the name of the birth family (I could use a custom event?)

However, I feel that I ought to be able to write a template to do this purely from the parent details (and the fact that one is relationship labelled 'Adopted').  So,:
1) How to identify that someone is adopted (without being certain in which order the parents are listed)?  Something involving =ContainsText(%INDI.FAMC[1+].PEDI[1]%,
'Adopted',STD) possibly?
2) How to identify whether the parents being displayed are the birth or adoptive parents?

I am having similar problems. If you solved yours - can you pass on some advice to me.

Here is my family history situation:

Jane had son Bob with unknown. Jane remarries Stan and puts up Bob for adoption. Bob is adopted by George and Jill. Bob stays in contact with Jane and Stan's family.

When I use the Adoption event and it asks Family ____ by ____, the only choices are Jane and unknown.

How do I show this adoption including Bob's new family?

Thank you for any advice!

I'm assuming you're using the Property window's Events tab to add the event. Clicking on the << button brings up a window that only allows the selection of existing family records.

One way round this is to create the adoptive family first, then create the adoption event.

Alternatively, you need use the All tab, or the record view of the main window, to add the adoption event. Select your child, right click on their name and add the adoption event. In the Parents family field, where it says '< click here to insert .......', click and choose 'Link to new family record' and then add the details of the adoptive parents.
