I have just recently purchased FH v3 with 3.1.2 upgrade, and have installed onto my computer. I created a gedcom in rootsmagic and transferred the file to FH. All was working fine, I then uploaded some photos into FH. I closed FH and then opened it. I got an error message saying: UNRECOGNISED FILE FORMAT
IF YOU ARE TRYING TO INSERT PICTURE, VIDEO DOCUMENT OR OTHER MULTIMEDIA FILE INTO FAMILY HISTORIAN, YOU SHOULD CLICK ON THE INSERT MENU AND CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE MENU ITEM. TO RESTORE FROM THE BACKUP, USE RESTORE ON THE FILE MENU.
Can anyone suggest what I need to do to fix this problem. Or do I need to uninstall and reinstall.
thanks
Dianne

It sounds like you've trying to open a file which is not the Gedcom file, or you've overwritten the Gedcom with something else. You can open the Gedcom file in Notepad and check that you can see some form of text. All lines in Gedcom start with a single digit followed by a short uppercase word and optionally followed by text you can read.
Re-exporting the file from RM is probably the best thing to do if you've haven't done much work on the Gedcom within FH.

When you added the pictures, you need to make sure you link them rather than embedding them, especially if they are large.
Also make sure you save the file you are working on before closing the program, just hit CTRL-S, or take the file/save option from the menu.

The error message happens when I open FH where the individuals page is displayed. I need to go ok on the error fault before I can open a file. I do agree that I could have tried to open the wrong file though and it may have caused the problem. I have started retyping in all the family data, but I do have quite a large file and will take me a considerable amount of time. I think that the error was caused by me and maybe it would be best if I uninstall and then reinstall. Any suggestions otherwise?

Hey I feel proud of myself, I fixed the problem. Some of the preference settings for file saving were set to save into the wrong file. I changed the file to be saved into FH and closed and reopened FH and all is well and working correctly.
Thanks for your help.[smile]
