Establishing a birth

I have the names of the husband and wife and strongly suspect that they had a child . Is there any way that I can check for a birth with just the parents, year, and location. Or do you need to know the christian name of the child? I have discovered that my Grandfather was married before meeting my Grandmother and am intrigued to know whether there was an issue from this marriage.

One method would be to look through the baptisms for all the churches in the location, most children were baptised somewhere until well into the 20th century.

If the child was born in or after 1912 then you can search births registered on ancestry.co.uk where you input just the name of the father and then put the maiden name of the mother in the corresponding box below. Sometimes be imaginative with spellings or use * as necessary. I have found some unexpected children this way, but it's only helpful if the children are born 1912-1919ish, which is pretty narrow.

Sorry that I have not replied earlier. Thanks for the advice but how would I go about identifying the parish churches? Are there any online sources? Also my child would probably be before 1912.

Try the GenUKI website and look for the county you are interested in:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/
You will be able to find the place you are interested in and it should list the nearby churches.
