After searching high and low for a marriage certificate I've come to the conclusion that two of my ancestors never married though they obviously lived together and had children, so far so good.
On the marriage status line I have the choice of denoting that they were either an 'Unmarried Couple' or 'Never Married'.
I think that the correct status would be 'Unmarried Couple', and the status 'Never Married' could then be applied to a single person who never married, but this option is greyed out unless the Spouse box is used.
Is this one for the 'Wish List' or am I alone in thinking that it would be useful in having the Status box as a stand alone feature?

Unmarried Couple or Never Married?
I like the idea of being able to make an individual as having never married, I have just tried to enter this for a maiden aunt and it now shows 'Spouse (-)' which suggests that she did marry but I don't know the name. It would also be useful if it were possible to enter 'no issue' somewhere, as if it is entered in the 'children' box it becomes a person record.
Unmarried Couple or Never Married?
My thoughts on Unmarried couple is the same as Rusty says - for those couples who lived together and had children, looked like a married couple but weren't. But this is only possible when you have proof that they didn't marry as opposed to not finding the proof. If you haven't got proof, then you can still make an assumption (that happens a lot in genealogy) but make a note about your assumption.
Never married in my view is for the situation where someone, usually the mother, has a child with someone but that it was more like an affair. The child would typically be illegitimate. The spouse would be the biological father of the child in this situation.
amuse, you can set a field in the individual's record to indicate no issue or no children. Look at the detail tab of the property dialog. You can also set a count of the number of marriages and if they never married, you can set the count to zero. These are attributes of the individual. The children count can be used in diagrams by setting the tickbox on the General tab labelled 'No-offspring marker'.

I agree with all the views above. I think the marriage status line list of options needs reviewing and updating to be able to give more scope.
