How does FH generate URL's when creating web sites

Post by Chris_Grice » 31 Jul 2007 22:21

Does anyone know how FH allocates URLs when creating a web site?

I have been delighted with the pages FH has created on my family tree site and it has been relatively straightforward to create a few 'custom' pages of my own. Theses pages of course contain several links to the pages created automatically by FH.

My question relates to keeping the site up to date. the simplest way to update the site, when new data has been added to my tree, would seem to be to let FH re-create the web pages as in the first instance. However I would anticipate that this would generate new URL's for some if not many of the pages - this would mean much work identifying changes to ensure any links in my own 'custom' pages still work correctly.

It would be very helpful to understand how (in what order?) the URL's are created by FH and then, at least, I might be able to anticipate how much work might be generated by any changes in the family tree data?

Thanks for any help

Cheers

Chris

I think individual pages and family pages are numbered using the record ID's from your file, so even if FH regenerates all its pages as long as you are using the same GEDCOM file, then those pages should stay the same.

You can easily check just look at a few people at random, and check the numbers against the record numbers on your file.

Many thanks Jane, a quick check like you suggested has confirmed that it is indeed the record numbers that appear to be used.

This should make it easy to keep things up to date - just have to remember not to renumber the records in my file!

Thanks again for your help

Cheers
