I have just purchased FH and loaded it on to my new computer.
I had been using the free version of BK and went for V3 of FH on the recommendation of my BIL.
The Computer shop transferred my data from the old comp. to the new before I bought FH
I started yesterday to input all my data on to FH, thinking I would have to start again. When I came back later I couldn't find the info I had entered, I was too tired by this time to try and find out what I had done wrong so decided to leave it until the next morning.
Instead I browsed through a file that was named by the comp shop 'old data'
When I clicked on that I found a file called GEDCOM file which I assumed was from BK, but when I opened it all the information was on the FH records page.
How did that happen?
I am very bad with computers and I have no earthly idea what has happened
Can anyone explain and why couldn't I find my first entries????

Thanks for any help

When you created the File in FH you would have saved it. To re-open the same file once you have opened FH, select the file menu and your original file will be listed and you can open it from there. You can also use the Preferences to set FH to open your file each time it starts.

I presume the GEDCOM file you found in your old computer data was an export from BK, almost all family history programs can export to GEDCOM format and some like FH store all the information in that format.

If your BIL/or other computer literate friend lives locally can I suggest you get him to come and tidy your family history data into a set of folders as suggested in the Knowledge Base.

To elaborate a little on Jane's answer, when you installed FH it automatically made itself the default program to open any GedCom file, so although your old file was saved by your old family tree program, you can now see it in FH without having to re-enter anything.

Thank you Jane & Chris

I am starting to slowly make my way through FH and gradually understanding it. I am sure I will get the hang of it and I can see a lot of benefits already
