help for beginner please

Post by skeptik4321 » 25 Jun 2007 22:21

I am lost! I have entered my basic family tree with no problem. Then I decided to enter some baptisms and marriages with a surname I am researching, but some of them may not be connected to me at all. I probably have double entries, or children not connected to parents they should be connected to, and don't know how I could connect the relevant ones to my tree. This new batch is about 150 names. I thought this would be an easy thing to sort out once I had entered them all but no. It seems easier to me to do it with pencil and paper - have I lost the plot? Also I can't begin to understand what good queries and lists would do me in this situation. Thanks in advance! skeptik4321

Don't panic (who said that before?)

Entering unrelated individuals is no problem - I entered lot of people in Piddington before I could fully link up all the families.

The thing that is 'hard' is knowing what info should link to others in the tree. Finding how to make / break links from the detailed properties tab (ALL) saved my sanity once (I still have one person with two parents!)

My tip is have a small .ged file to play with while you get the hang of the tools.

As to queeries - I am behgind the curve on these but they can help locate problems (I believe!)

To link existing people together I use the main tab on the property box.  To link a child to a parent click on the child space and you are offered a 'link to existing record' option, click on that and find the person - and you can do the same for parents too.

To unlink there is a menu item under edit on the main toolbar - first click on the person you want to unlink and go to the edit/unlink item and click on the relationship you want to undo.

Can anybody please tell me if there is a way of adding Godchildren to the family tree?
I have managed to add several generations without problems but I can't find any reference to godchildren; this being an important part of our family.
Many thanks,
John

You can either use a custom attributes or associated persons, or a
combination of the two.

Custom attributes will give you the best results in narrative reports,
while associated persons allow a quick jump on the all tab to the
godparent.

You might want to consider using both as one can support the other.
