Family Names Query

Post by DStevely » 25 Jun 2007 13:28

As a newcomer I wonder if it is possible to create a list of the surnames in a family tree.
I would like to have a simple list which has one line entry for each different surname in the total list of individuals.

Help appreciated.

Family Names Query

It's easy enough to create a query that will show a list of surnames in your family tree file.  But there's no way that you can get it to only show each surname once.

To create a surname list, create a new Individual query in the Query Window.  In the Fields list, expand 'Name' and select :SURNAME.  Click '>' to add it.  Select Name(SURNAME) and change the heading to just 'Surname' and the Sort to 'Ascending' and click Update.  You might want to add filters to remove NULL names and empty surnames, too.

When you run the query it will show a list of surnames.  If you select all the cells and copy them into another program, you may be able to get rid of the duplication that way.
