Unrecognized date format from GEDCOM import

Post by markp99 » 05 Jun 2007 20:45

I have imported a GEDCOM file. FH does not know how to handle a very common date format provided by the this import:

YYYY-MM-DD
Example: '1740-11-21'

Is is possible to convert these dates to the format expected by DH?

Example: '21 Mar 1740'

I have hundreds of names, each with 1-3 dated events. A manual effort will be quite large.

Any suggestions to make the required correction/conversion?

Thanks :)

What program exported in that format? Can you adjust the export options?

That format is not a standard gedcom one.

You might be able to use a scripting language to convert the dates.

Changing the months to words is obviously easy but resequencing the data may be more problematic.

FH can understand the format - well it depends on which version the feature was put into, I'm using 3.1.2

The solution is to go to Tools->Preferences->File/Load Save.

One of the options is the numeric date format to recognise. yyyy/mm/dd is one of them. When you load the file FH will then understand the Japanese format. When you save the file FH always saves in a textual manner.

Thanks Jon, I had forgotten you could over-ride the standard.

In preferences you will also have to change the default date separator from '/' to '-' as well
