Program compatibility problem in Vista

Post by regrowlands » 08 May 2007 11:33

Today the following report came through when I booted my PC this morning. I have been working on my database with no apparent problem. I am running on a PC with a VISTA upgrade.
What is the problem and should I just try and re-install the upgrade? I can forward to someone the appcompat.txt file if necessary.

Program compatibility problem in Vista

If FH is running OK, just do the About option from the help menu to see what version you are running, I suspect it's some Vista Glitch, I am not running Vista at the moment so can not really comment further.

Program compatibility problem in Vista

Post by nsw » 08 May 2007 19:24

When I installed FH on Vista (Ultimate) and after each of the 2 FH upgrades I've installed since, I got a message box saying 'This program might not have installed correctly'. I didn't worry about this, assuming it was just Vista being over cautious and Family Historian does run perfectly well. The 'Problem Reports and Solutions' window that you refer to is available in Control Panel but also seems to run every so often automatically. When I got a similar report to you, but mentioning all 3 errors, I realised the message might actually be worth telling Simon at Calico Pie about. Simon wasn't aware of the problem and wasn't able to reproduce it. At least now someone else has come across this it might help him to track it down.

Perhaps it would help if everyone else who has Vista could go to Control Panel, run 'Problem Reports and Solutions' and then click on 'See Problems to Check' and see if there are any Family Historian issues reported, it might help Simon. Report back findings to this thread.

Hi Nick and Reg
I had the same report log when I upgraded to FH 3.1.2 although the program seems to be running ok at the moment. Hopefully Simon will shed some light on it.

It might be worth sending simon the 'appcompat.txt' if you still have it, just in case it has something useful in it.

I ran the report and found the same problem, marked as unreported. The file mentioned just contains mentions to various FH files and the ancestry DJVU image control (as far as I can tell).

FH is running fine.

File contains:

I too now have the problem showing in vista after applying the latest update.
Having said that though it appears to be working fine.

Program compatibility problem in Vista

Post by bardon » 22 May 2007 14:07

I too have the same problem with Vista Home pemium as reported above, and I also have a problem using the FHUG toolbar 'News' facility, which seems to have gone into a loop from which I cannot escape.
I found this when migrating FH from my desktop to my laptop. As others report FH still seems to work but I have not exhaustively tested all it's facilities.
HOWEVER I have found a problem when trying to use the FHUG toolbar on my Vista Laptop. I open unread posts accessed via 'News' in the FHUG toolbar and then move on to do other things. When next I return to read new posts I find that there are none (Though my desktop shows that there are), and the posts which I had read are now shown as unread! I also found that Internet Explorer crashed twice whilst exploring this fault; unfortunately I do not know why, because Vista 'helpfully' reported a problem, closed down IE and then re-started it. It appears that the FHUG News facility when used in Vista goes into a time warp loop from which there is no escape, or is it just my laptop!
Has anyone else found problems with Vista and the FHUG News toolbar?
Needless to say the migration from desktop to laptop is on hold.
I suggest that the claim that FH works with Vista be removed until the known problems with Vista have been resolved.[frown]

The Tool Bar is NOTHING to do with Family historian it's a program which is provided via the FHUG site.

Please feel free to uninstall it, if it is not working for you.

I have looked into this one, and I believe that it is caused by a difference of opinion between Vista and the installation program we use.  I am hopeful that upgrading to the latest version of the installation program should fix this problem (stop Vista complaining unnecessarily).
