Has anyone installed FH on a Ubunto system?
If so how did you get on?

Thanks for the link Jane.
I had already seen that one and it didn't really give the info I was wanting.
However, I'm going to try installing FH on either Kubunto or Ubunto shortly, anyway. So I should find out one way or the other!!!
Many thanks, Colin.[smile]

I tried to add FH to my Fedora 8 computer using Wine 1.1.5. The installation appeared to go without fuss but when I tried to add my CD code, the buttons to Accept or Cancel do not work. I can click them but the program takes no action.[frown]

Hi Barry, I've had no luck yet! But I am stil trying, and there are folk like Maximus out there that are also giving it a go. We will eventually get there one day!
I'm going to try and put a Linux version onto a Flash Drive and see if it will take it on there, it'll be great if it does.[grin]

I don't know if this helps but I have got F.H. working on Ubuntu.

Load Wine from http://www.winehq.org
Follow instructions (set repository key, add repository, get package).
Install FH from your version 2 disk.

Get copies of mshtml.dll and shdocvw.dll from a Windows machine and install them into $HOME/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32.
IMPORTANT BIT!
Run winecfg and on the “libraries” tab override the settings for the two dlls so that wine uses the native ones instead of the builtins.
Install the FH upgrade from your version 3 disk.
Run FH version 3.
FH will bring up a blank window. Dismiss the window, then put in your licence details in the window that appears next.
FH version 3 should now work OK.
Run any update file.

Hi DeeJay1,
About 3 months have passed since your post.  How is FH now running within Wine on Linux?  Would you kindly post an update?  Had you previously run FH under Windows?  If so what differences have you noticed?  Do you also run Gedcom Census this way?

I am a wannabe Linux user, not yet a newbie even. I am in the throws of housekeeping my XP setup with a view to dual booting Kubuntu (and Wine) with WinXP.

When XP becomes completely obsolete I wish to be able to ditch MS O/S and applications completely.  MS products are now far too expensive and complicated for most home users.  (I started long before Win 3.0 using 8-bit machines)

I still use Windows on my main PC and had a dual boot on my old PC. I too was intending to move over to Linux but there are still a couple of programs I use are not compatible with Linux.

In the end I did not use FH in anger on the Linux machine, but all the operations I tried worked. The file structure is slightly different to windows, so queries etc. are in a different place, but once you work out where they are it is no hardship.

I am sorry I cannot be of more help to you.

I have successfully migrated through all versions onto Ubuntu/Wine using upgrade disks and applying the advice earlier in this stream, but now, for version 4, the licensing mechanism is different and the solution for V3 doesn't work.

Does anyone have any further suggestions?

Chris

Chris,

I have noticed this as well. Pity, because it seems to work well otherwise (I am using Ubuntu 9).

I wonder if anyone at Calico can help with this ?

Geoff.
