Please tell me the best way to enter different branches of my family. I have set up different files for my mother's side and my father's side, another file for my direct ancestors, maybe this was a mistake as people have different ID numbers in each file.Should I re-enter them all in the same file? If not, if I have the same person in more than one file, how can I enter info so that it will be duplicated into each file without having to enter it more than once? I thought I was fairly computer literate but I am really struggling with this programme! Probably I'm being very stupid! Thanks in advance!

Personally I only keep one file, it keeps everything easy to manage. I know of people running 10,000 people plus in one file.
You can always merge your files together using FH.
The other option is to use manually assigned custom ID's in all your files.

I also keep just the one file for my main tree (3,000+ names so far!).You can always split the tree if you want to.I only have other trees for families that may be connected and if they do I merge it into the main tree.[smile]

One file for me too - and I have another file for a possibly connected ancient branch, but it uses someone else's research so far back which is very sus - I demerged/split it as I could not prove it and it confused my own researches.
