FTW File

Post by paulbristow » 10 Mar 2007 22:39

I have just purchased Family Historian V3.1 and I have some data (2 years research) from Family Tree Maker, unfortunantly I forgot to export as a gedcom file and I have only the .ftw and .fbk files, but this will not open or import into Historian.

I am desperate to get these files into Historian and I do not have Family Tree Maker any more so I cannot install it to export as a gedcom file for use in Historian. Does anybody know how I can do this?

Any idea what version of FTM you were using?

I have a very old copy, but don't have it currently loaded on to my system. I know the file format changed on later versions.

There is also the GenViewer Program, which can read and export data to gedcom from FTM files and I see from the spec it can export to gedcom

Thanks for the tip about Genviewer Jane, I have a couple of FTW files laying around from other researchers who couldn't work out how to export to a Gedcom from FTM (I know simple but not everyone is a computer user) which I can at least now view.

if you get stuck, let me know, as I have the current version of Family Tree Maker installed on my computer.  I could easily convert it to gedcom if you email it to me.

Jane

Thank you for the information, I managed to download the GenViewer program I thought it would save out a Gedcom file but it it does not but I was able to print out the information so at least I can re-enter the information, thanks for your help

Paul it does save, but you need to use the Island export option.

Several months down the road I now find myself in the same position as Paul. I have received a .FTW file from a distant relative, who is struggling to produce a GEDCOM export from Family Tree Maker, and want to convert it to GEDCOM. I can't get Genviewer to do this. It seems as though it will only generate a GEDCOM (either standalone or via Islands) if the input file is also a GEDCOM.

I come back, therefore, to the original question. Is there a program (not FTM, obviously!) that will do the conversion. If not - Dave, does your offer still stand?

If your relative needs help to use FTM to produce a Gedcom, point them at this page where there are instructions on how to do it.

Another option is to download the current beta for FTW 2008 and load it in to that and export it from there.

http://beta.familytreemaker.com/

It's a BIG download though 170Mb so you need a good Broadband link.
