If I delete a record from FH it seems to leave that record number unused and so I get 'holes' in the numbering sequence. Is there anyway to force FH to reuse the numbers or to renumber everyone again so that the numbers are all sequential?

You can always use the renumbering tools to renumber all the people. FH always allocates a number higher than the highest number.
