I've set up a custom family attribute for marriage witness, so far so good, but I keep getting the field {couple} replaced by 'they', rather than the names of the couple. The help file, helpfully [rolleyes], says that {couple} will be replaced by the value 'they' or the couple's names depending on the context, but then omits to define the contexts in which either replacements apply [cry].
How do I get the couple's names displayed? Is it possible to get the witness attribute set up as an attribute of the marriage, instead of a family attribute, and if so how? There are other attributes of marriages too, e.g. by licence or Banns, presiding vicar, which of either or both signed or made their mark, etc., that I'd like to be able to store that are attributes of a marriage rather than a general family attribute.

Marriage witnesses, again!
I presume you are entering the witnesses against the couple who married and entering the names into the value column?
If so you could try.
The witnesses to the marriage, on the {date}, at {place} were {value}.
or even just
The witnesses to the marriage were {value}.
If you check out the wish list you will find a wish to allow the addition of fields to an event or attribute.
Marriage Banns are an event in there own right and are supported with a standard family event. I tend to use the cause field on the marriage event for the marriage type, by license or by Banns.

Hello Jane
I've voted on the custom fields wish list item - I found it after I posted my message!
My template currently stands as:
{value} was a witness at the marriage of {couple} {date} {place}
Adding the attribute causes a dialogue box to be displayed for me to select the marriage, so I assume that the required context for the attribute was set to allow {couple} to be determined explicitly.

Marriage witnesses, again!
Hello Again Jane
I can see that Banns is a separate event, and that it can be used to hold the dates and places for the reading of the Banns. However, I would suggest that there still needs to be a property of the marriage that simply indicates if the marriage is by Banns or Licence, rather than having to infer that fact by the presence of an appropriate family attribute. After all, the dates and places for the reading of the Banns may not be available information, but a copy of the marriage certificate, which people are far more likely to have access to, will provide that information.
