how can i find

Post by tracyjgiles » 24 Feb 2007 00:58

I have found a husband of one of the Mace family.

lilian Mace 1876/7 I have note of her being christened in 5 nov 1876 in Todenham Gloucestershire but born in 1877.

She married a William Henry Holden on 22 Aug 1897

I know no other details about him

is there any way of veiwing the marriage cert without purchasing it??

or any other cert come to that??

Thanks Tracy

If the register has been deposited in the Local Record Office you could go there and look at it or a microfilm copy of it.

Tracy,
Parish records are usually held at the relevant County Record Office. But always phone first to check. The CRO for Gloucestershire is in Gloucester and I have the address as
Gloucestershire Record Office, Clarence Row, Alvin Street, Gloucester. Tel 01452 425295.
This address & phone number is a few years old so may not be up to date. If it is out of date the County Council office should be able to give you the correct details.

The best record offices have the parish records on micro film and you can help yourself to whichever film you require. Other record offices require you to request the required record and then someone goes to fetch it for you.

I can find marriage and christening for Lilian on the IGI easily enough. Searching for William Henry suggests that this has been non uncommon in Gloucester through the 1800s

FreeBMD shows the marriage in Shipston

The 91 census shows 9 WH Holden entries, six are sons, four are old enough to marry around 1897. In this census she shows up as Lillian Mace, and searching for Lillian Holden on 1901 finds her married to a William Holden, blacksmith, born 1877 in Chesterfield.

Not as certain as the certificate but I think a reasonable chain of logic

Many record offices have lists of their holdings online, also check the parish on genuki, under Church records, it may tell you where you can see them
