Polish descent

Post by kateabbott » 22 Feb 2007 12:47

I am writing on behalf of my colleague, who wishes to know how you might access birth certificates, or indeed any information, about relatives born in Poland. Is there a records resource that can be accessed over here?

All she knows about her Grandfather is that he was born in Lviv, Poland (now Ukraine) around the 1920's, and his surname was Ochyra.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

You could check out some of the sites at Cyndi's list for Poland

If the anchestors are of Jewish Descent you should try http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/index.htm

Unfortunately the online ordering facility from the Polish archives is discontinued. I used this to find my maternal grandfather's wedding certificate.

You might also find the http://www.jewishgen.org will give you useful links.

Two very good web sites to start from for Polish genealogy are PolishRoots (http://www.polishroots.org) and Polish Genealogy Links (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/ ... ishpg.html).

Look at http://www.polishroots.org/genpoland/certif.htm to see how to order a certificate. You will need to know the town where the event was registered and write directly to the office there. They will require payment in advance and unfortunately you are unlikely to get a response to a letter written in any language other than Polish.

Anyway, good luck!
