Family vanished

Post by tracyjgiles » 22 Feb 2007 08:23

I have been researching the Mace family from Todenham, Gloucestershire. I had sketchy information to start with, which helped as there are so many of them in the area.

I read through most of the gfhs site and came up with a link for http://www.rootsweb.com/~engcots/Census.html

Cotswolds and surrounds census.

Anyone looking for names in the area this is brilliant.

BUT........the records go as far as 1891, so i truddled off the find the families in 1901 census. Paid my fees to access the information only to find NOTHING!!!Not one person from the 1841 to 1891 censuses.

I can find them in BDM!

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG.

Can anyone help please.

Thanks Tracy

If you let us know more details as to their names and approximate birth years, etc. someone might be able to help you find them.

I think a big mistake that beginners make is to assume that their ancestors always used the same spelling of their surname. A very large number of people couldn't read and write until the late 1800s or early 1900s and so it was down to the person (census taker, vicar, etc.) writing the information down to write down what they hear. So they could be recorded as Maise, Mays, Mase, Maze, etc. Sometimes a 'soundex' search can be used which searches for some variants but you often need to use a bit of imagination with these searches.

Also remember that the indexes to the census records which have become available over recent years are often difficult to read and therefore transcribed badly. Sometimes there is no alternative but to systematically look through 100s of census pages for the area where you believe they were living at the time.

Ancestry census search has a feature that may be useful here... use first names (less often misspelt) of the children and their parents, approx dates and locations, and leave off the surname entirely. You may get back a few pages to browse through and may be able to spot them.

I have found quite a few families where the surname, or place of birth etc are incorrectly spelt on the census.
This is particularly the case with the indexing of the 1901 census.

Try searching for one of the person in the family with the most unusual firstname.
Omit the surname, but include approx year of birth and limit the search to the county you are looking for.
I have found that this method usually brings up the family I am looking for.

You should be able to use the source citation references to go to the correct page on the 1901 Census Site.

Just use the Piece, Folio and Page references in the Reference Search here
http://www.1901census.nationalarchives. ... =di_search

I used Ancestry to find them so its probably just the 1901 site's index letting you down.

Using Free BMD (freebmd.org.uk) there is a reference to Ann Mace dying in the 2nd Quarter of 1891 (just after the census) aged 68 and registered in Shipston Registration district which apparently included Todenham. Reference is 6d 556

There is also a reference to Charles Mace dying in the 1st Quarter of 1891. He must have died just before the census was taken so Emily was only recently widowed. Again this is in the Shipston registration district reference 6d 470.

You'll find them in the 1871 census (and probably earlier too) too if you search using the Ancestry.co.uk website. The ancestry website has the 1841 to 1901 census indexes. This does cost money although some libraries offer free access, it depends where you live I think.

Thanks for all the advice, I am finding it hard to know which sites to subscribe to (particularily on limited funds)

I have found the census's from 1841 to 1891 but had come to a stop.

How would you find out the dates of when they were christened?

I found some christening details on the latter day saints site but they dont tie in with the dates i have from the census.

Is it usual to feel so useless to start with??

Can I suggest perhaps getting a copy of the 'The Genealogists Internet' which will give a comprehensive guide to many of the sites, also perhaps a copy of Ancestral Trails, which I bought years ago and still refer to occasionally.

Few christenings are indexed, other than on the IGI or specialist transcribers like OPC's (Online Parish Clerks) or Family History Societys http://www.familyhistoryonline.co.uk
