Hi,
Im still learning how to get around the program and this time last week hadn't found half of what i can do now.
What im looking to do is transfer from ged file to something like rich text file, but im totally lost how to.
I did manage to get it into note pad but then it took a very long time to take out the unwanted sentences. I gave up after my parents!
Sorry if the answer to this is obvious but im not very computer literate, I just get by!!
Thanks for listening
Tracy

What kind of format are you wanting to get in your RTF file? Are you wanting raw data, or just a report with minimal narrative text?
To get minimal text, use the Record details reports (Reports->Record Detail reports->Record Detail - Individual), then save the report as an RTF file. To get closer to the raw data, copy the records to the clipboard (highlight all the records and select Edit->Copy) and then paste into a document (or notepad). If you are just wanting the gedcom itself you can open the .GED file in Word though it won't be very readable!

Hi Jon
Thanks for answering.
What im trying to do is send my newly found half brother a copy of all the information i have so far.
But he does not use gedcom files. I think he is compiling the tree in an autocad program.
As you amy have gathered im not great on computing but i'll give anything a go.
It is such a maze!!

Posting at the same time! [smile]
One way I get my documents into Adobe format is to use OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office. It's very similar to MS Office plus it's free (or cheap , and it has the capability to export documents in PDF format.
Other methods include various utilities and shareware software which can convert the files. Another way is to get hold of a PDF printer driver which redirects the report as it's being printed and saves it as a PDF instead. Search on Google for 'RTF to PDF' or 'PDF printer driver'.
Open Office is available at
http://www.openoffice.org/ and click the BIG green button.

Hi Jon
Big thanks for all the info
I did as you said in the first reply and generated a report. It is now in Canada!!
I tend not to go into tabs I dont understand as in the past i have lost bucket loads of information never to be found again. The joys of learning computing the hard way! They say you learn something new every day.......and today that must be my lesson.
Thanks again.

It might be worth posting a couple of the names you are looking for here so someone can try searching for you.
If you are looking at Ancestry the indexes can be a bit 'poor' to say the least so you sometimes need to be a bit vague on what you search for.

Thanks Jane
My biggest headache so far is my grandmothers mother
Gertrude Mace was born in Moreton, Todenham, Gloucestershire 12 Jul 1884
1901 census domestic servent to a butchers in Pershire
04/11/1904 she gave birth to Everlyn Vera Mace (brought up by grandparents)
Then she disappears.............
I would really like to know what happened to her

You will probably struggle to find any information post 1901 as there are few easy to use resources. You could manually search the GRO index pages forward from 1904 to see if you can find a marriage, as FreeBMD has little indexed post 1906.

I think the mystery of her disappearence will stay just that until further records are released.
Thanks ever so much for all the help you have given me so far.
