I have seen the tutorial on adding info from birth certs & adding individuals at that time.
I have most of my people already on the data base but only now getting the various certificates. How does one create the sources without duplicating the the names already there?

Adding Sources
The quickest way I know is to follow the example to create a new source and set the auto source citation on.
Then on the all tab or the records window, select each event that you want to add the source to and right click and select the 'paste auto source citation', which will add the current source to the event.
