Searching multiple event/attributes

Post by JonAxtell » 28 Jan 2007 15:32

Searching multiple events should be an easy thing to do. It's also more common than searching for a specific instance of an event. If you're looking for something across many individuals how are you to know if it's their first marriage or their second that you need to examine.

There is the [1+] method of specifing which specific range of events to search but that's not intuitive plus it's not supported by the selection method from the tree of events/attributes. Plus you need to dig in the manual/help to relise that it's there since there is no indication that it's possible from the prompts for creating a query. And it's location in the help indicates its for advanced users. Plus you can't do ranges, say [2-3] or even [2-3,5].

There is also Edit->Find Record which can be used to search all events/attributes (if you use the all text fields option), but that's very basic and finds everything when you might just want to search marriages, not births and deaths as well.

It should be possible to just select 'Events' or 'Attributes' (even both) and the search should find any occurance of the match in any type of event/attribute. If you select just a single type of event (say marriage) then it should search all marriages.

So FAM.MARR looks in any subfield of all marriages for the match, FAM.MARR.SOUR.PAGE looks in the Where Within field of all sources for all marriages for all families.

This has some connection to the wishlist item to display multiple events in a column (each on a seperate line) since if you're searching multiple events then you might want to display more than one match per individual/family.
