Family Historian User Group

Can anyone provide guidance as to the most appropriate method of recording census data?
I am aware of the census tag for individuals and also for families, but I am unclear as to which ought to be used, and the impact of using both would have in subsequent query writing.
I would have expected that the family census tag would allow me to record all the family members present in the household at that time - not just the parents, but this does not appear to be the case.
Also, for the individual record, I would want to record (as it does in the census) the relationship between the individual and the head of the household - son, daughter, mother-in-law, servant, etc.
On the reporting aspects, I would want to be able to create a query which would, for a selected address / place, and census date: report all individuals present, ages, relationships, etc. (as per the census return.)  [confused]

I currently record Census information as follows.  There are several requests on the Wish List for an easier way to enter Census information, but for now I use the following.

I currently only have one source for each census and the following is based on that.  I may in the future change to one source per piece folio although I have not yet done so. This will allow me to attach the tif's from the 1901 census to the sources.

1. Set up autosource for the relevent Census including piece/folio address, etc.

2. For each family member I then add a Census Record, with the age as shown on the census and a note showing relationship to the Head.  For those with occupations I also add the Occupation, with date.

As autosource is on any new family members are automatically sourced to the Census.

Once all the members are done I turn off AutoSource.

There is no reason not to attach the Census to the family groups as well.

If you think this is long winded you should try it in FTM.

For your Query, I think you will be best to have one source per folio piece you can then select all people with that source link.

That looks logical - I will give it a try.
.... and no, I don't think that it is too long winded!  I am sure that (like most things in life) it can be improved upon, but it will certainly do for now!

I decided that I would create a note record for each type of relationship to the head of household and then this will enable me to find all people of one type of relationship e.g finding all people that have been heads of household.
